PlayIt v2.03
Copyright (c) 1993 - 1995 Shamrock Systems and Technology
All Rights Reserved
Installation Instructions
-------------------------
1. System Requirements:
- 386SX or higher
- 2MB of RAM (4 MB or higher recommended)
- Windows 3.1 or higher installed
- Microsoft Video for Windows installed (optional)
- Apple Quicktime for Windows installed (optional)
- Xing Technologies MCI MPEG driver installed (optional)
2. Installing PlayIt
Run the SETUP.EXE program that came with PlayIt v2.03. If you have ever
installed a Windows program before, you will know what to expect. If you
haven't, it is really simple.
3. Installing Microsoft Video for Windows
PlayIt will run best if Video for Windows 1.1e is installed. If you
received a set of distribution disks from Shamrock Systems & Technology,
you will find the Video for Windows 1.1e runtime on disk 3. Simply run
the SETUP.EXE program on that disk to install.
If you don't have the Video for Windows runtime already, you can find it
in the following locations:
+ CompuServe: GO WINMM, Library 2, file VFW11E.ZIP
+ Internet : ftp.microsoft.com in /developer/drg/multimedia/vfw11e.zip
+ Possibly on the same BBS you obtained PlayIt from.
If you have other Windows software that works with AVI, you may already
have the required drivers installed. An easy way to check is to click
on the Drivers icon in the Windows Control Panel. If the MCI device
Video for Windows is listed, you have the AVI drivers installed. For
best results, make sure you have version 1.1e of Video for Windows. One
way to tell is to see if you have the Microsoft ACM driver installed.
PlayIt will run without VfW, but you will not be able to work with AVI
files nor compressed BMP images. You will get an error message when you
attempt to load an AVI file if you do not have the drivers correctly
installed. If you know you have the Video for Windows runtime installed
correctly and PlayIt still refuses to load the file, try playing it with
Media Player, which is in the Windows Accessories group. If Media Player
works with the file, please send us the offending AVI and we'll see what
we can do to fix the problem.
4. Installing QuickTime for Windows
PlayIt will run best if QuickTime for Windows 2.0 is also installed.
If you received the registered version of PlayIt from Shamrock Systems
and Technology, QuickTime for Windows can be installed along with PlayIt
by clicking the appropriate option when you begin the install.
If you don't have the Apple Quicktime for Windows 2.0 runtime already,
you can find it in the following location:
+ CompuServe: GO QTIME ($9.95 charge to download, no connect charges)
5. Obtaining drivers from Shamrock Systems and Technology
If you cannot find the Video for Windows or Quicktime drivers, you can
obtain a shareware distribution kit from Shamrock Systems and Technology
which includes an unregistered copy of PlayIt v2.03 and all required AVI
and Quicktime drivers by mailing your request along with $7.95 USD, or
$9.95 Cdn to:
Shamrock Systems and Technology
#428, 10636 - 120 Street
Edmonton, Ab, T5H 4L5
Canada
All requests will be processed within 48 hours of our receiving your
order. Please include your name and mailing address. For simplicity,
print out the file ORDER.TXT and fill in the appropriate fields.
Due to licensing restrictions, we are presently unable to distribute any
MCI MPEG drivers. Refer to the help file for information on obtaining
these drivers.
6. Technical support
If you experience any problems using PlayIt v2.03, or you find a file or
video that it simply doesn't like, you can contact Shamrock Systems at:
Fax : 403-426-5040
CompuServe : 70274,24
Internet : patrick@shamrck.ersys.edmonton.ab.ca
Snail Mail : listed above.
If you contact us by regular post, please include your name, address,
and a copy of the file that gave you grief. We will happily send you an
updated version after the problem has been corrected. For the quickest
response, please use the Internet address.
7. Additional information
Select Contents from the HELP menu in PlayIt, or press F1, to find out
how to use the program.
Please note that PlayIt is licensed to use LZW compression and is also
licensed to distribute QuickTime for Windows 2.0 by disk only.
8. Benefits of Registration
You may be asking yourself why you should bother registering this
product. There are a number of reasons.
First, shareware only works if the end users register the products they
continue to use. Not doing so is just as bad as stealing the software.
Shareware authors spend a great deal of time developing their products,
and it gives them a great feeling to know they are appreciated.
Second, registered users of PlayIt will receive the latest version of
the software, Video for Windows, QuickTime for Windows, technical support
and be kept up to date on future enhancements to the software. Since
PlayIt is constantly undergoing additions and improvements, this is the
easiest way to stay on top. Our policy regarding upgrades goes as
follows: the first upgrade is free and will be sent automatically. After
that, you will receive a notice every other release with an offer to
upgrade for $5.00 USD.
Finally, it would really make me very happy and it really is not a lot
of money. See the file ORDER.TXT for a form which can be printed and
popped in the mail.
Thank you for giving PlayIt a try.
